The Grotto [mesh] from Trompe Loeil

Trompe Loeil's Designer Challenge

Incorporating detailed stonework, a sundrenched patio area and a bathing pool in a style reminiscent of ancient stone palaces hidden in a desert oasis, this month's photo inspiration was a departure from Trompe Loeil's usual arboreal style, but a fantastic first project to design in mesh. The Grotto takes advantage of the low prim count conversion of mesh, resulting in detailed stacked pillars and fencing at a much lower land impact than a prim version.

The Grotto is an open-air build consisting of double staircases leading up to a raised, generously sized stone patio with inlaid water channels that guide the flowing fountain water from matching raised pitchers into a tiled bathing pool. Set back from the patio, a curtained double-height gazebo-style structure welcomes visitors with the glow from stained glass hanging lanterns. Decorate with your favorite rugs, lounging pillows, tables and animations for a decadent beachside retreat fit for royalty. Package also includes two sculpted palm trees from the Trompe Loeil Caparra Collection for easy extra landscaping.

Each curtain grouping can be set to one of 5 different colors on touch for your own unique color customization. Mod/Copy permissions and carefully designed mesh objects make it easy to add in your own additional landscaping using the pillars and fencing.

Hello Customers,

I'm excited to announce the release of a new large commercial set (37 structures), the [ba] colonia set. I have been working on this for several months now after many requests for a new big set since the cote d'azur set.

The set is inspired after the beautiful architecture and bold colors of old San Juan, Puerto Rico and is build is hosted in the amazing Costa Rica Sims community here in SL, but all the parts and structures are available for sale as a set to build your own unique sim. I’ve made some changes in this set from my old one, significantly lighter on prims, the structures range from 13 prims to 44 prims and use megaprims.

The infrastructure is more richly detailed and you are not only given prebuilt sections but also textures are provided to give you more freedom on how roads, sidewalks, and seawalls can be configured.

The accessories/extras are a mix of efficient prim work and high quality sculpts so they add atmosphere but don't eat up all your prims. some variety is given so you can more easily achieve different looks and make your colonia set-up different from everyone else’s. All parts are mod/copy. All structures are in auto-rez packages for easier set up. It can be purchased as a set or single structures and components.

Also the AMAZING Cory Edo of Trompe Loeil has made a special pack of foliage and plants perfectly suited for the new set, and she is offering it for sale in a big discount pack. I'm very picky about my plants and these are my new favorites for sure.

For now all the individual pieces are only available at the [ba] colonia shop in Old Costa Rica sim as the set is quite large. The whole sim is built with the set so feel free to look around. Please come take a look around and enjoy the new sim!

As the Ozimals sim opens today full of fun and surprises, Ozimals, along with Barnesworth Anubis & caLLie cLine announce a new partnership. Anubis and cLine will expand their Benedict & Florentine "pampered pet items" to include a new brand "veLveteen". Under the veLveteen brand, Anubis and cLine will create bunnie-centric items for Ozimals. The line will focus on bunnies homes and living environments.

Ozimals are the next generation of AI breedable pets brought to Second Life by the imaginative minds that brought the the successful Land of Oz to SL with the Magic of Oz sim. Heading up the team are Candy Cerveau and Malkavyn Eldritch. Cerveau and Eldritch have been working on the Ozimal concept and execution for the past several months and first animals Ozimals will offer will be bunnies. "I have always loved bunnies in real life and I thought that they would be a natural choice for a breedable pet because of their many varieties and endearing traits," said Cerveau when explaining the reason for choosing bunnies as the first Ozimal line of pets. "SL is limited by the absence of the tactile but bunnies are universally acknowledged as being soft and cuddly."

"I love bunnies too" says cLine. "After making our first houses for chickens, we heard bunnies were coming and kept that in mind as we were designing. We loved the idea of making things that were fun and a different for 'animal houses', and one day I told Barnes that I wanted to contact the bunnie people." She found out there were a few doing bunnies, and after speaking to Cerveau and hearing more of the Ozimals vision cLine was sold. "It's not everyday you meet folks who really have the passion and commitment to excellence I saw with the Ozimals team and I was confident we could attach our names and exclusivity to this project as we all really care about what we're making."

Cerveau had this to say about the new partnership, "when Barnesworth and Callie approached us to create an exclusive line of housing for the bunnies, I was thrilled. Barnesworth is an incredible builder and Callie has some very innovative ideas. We knew that any products that came out of that partnership would be fantastic." Both parties are excited about this new partnering and excited about working to create the most excellent products for the emerging pet market.

Anubis agrees with cLine's assessment of the new partnership with Ozimals, "I am thrilled to be working on this project with caLLie and Ozimals. Knowing the dedication the Ozimals team has and their attention to every detail gives me confidence about their product and vision" says Anubis. Helloooo been awhile pals,

I know a lot of you have already seen the new store, and some of you have even bought the new prefabs, but I haven't gotten a chance to officially open with a bang yet, there is a lot of news about whats new so I am just going to jump in. If you prefer to just get right to the new stuff, sale info, and freebie tour info feel free to just jump past all this nonsense text to the pictures or head to the store and just browse around, although there is some important stuff that may concern you if you have made previous purchases.

First of all, new store! Please take the new landmark attached above as the store is not in the same spot as the old one, but same sim. Feel free to ohh and ahh over it, I spent a lot of time trying to make a more functional and flowing layout than the old one. All the vendors now also have multiple pictures of each house (just press the arrows to browse) as well as info cards with more detailed specs, great for taking along with you to compare with other prefabs.

Also a lot of old products have been updated. All residential prefabs with more than one part now have an auto rezzor. I have also rescripted all of the residential prefabs that already had scripting with new easier to manage and more stable scripts. Some old unscripted prefabs have been scripted as well, however not all prefabs are scripted, so be sure to read the attributes and features on the vendors before assuming a prefab has been updated.

All scripted prefabs now have a central access control panels that allows you to easily add new users, toggle door locks, and change window privacy. Many of the houses also have some chat commands as well.

Some prefabs have undergone design changes and texture upgrades as well according to customer feedback. I hope you all will approve!

If you have an old version of a prefab and would like to upgrade, I will be offering information on how to soon. Please keep an eye out and be sure you join the subscribeomatic in the shop if you already havent (no group spot required) for more information on that.

The Modern No. 1 - a sleek new style from Trompe Loeil artistic prefabs.

This is a tri-level home in lighted concrete, wood, and matte black with three-setting privacy windows, lockable doors, three huge rooms all with patios, and a Home Control Center in disguise as a sculpted stone waterfall.

Modern No. 1 is completely scripted and maintained via a Home Control Center (the Stone Fountain, which comes in your choice of two sizes). As the owner, you can edit the Notecard in the Home Control Center to control the doors and windows from one central area, and also give permissions to either individuals or an entire group to control these features as well!

The windows on each of the three rooms also operate independently, so you can have privacy in one room and a view in the others.

The Arc Vacation Lodge is a scaled-down version of The Arc Luxury Lodge. Showcasing the same rich feel of the original, but at a much slimmer 225 prims, this 2 story loft style lodge comes with two fireplaces, doors, privacy windows, and more, scripted and move-in ready.

FEATURES

The Arc Vacation Lodge is completely scripted and maintained via a Home Control Center (located inside the front door on the left as you walk in). As the owner, you can edit the Notecard in the Home Control Center to control the doors, windows, and lighting from one central area, and also give permissions to either individuals or an entire group to control these features as well!

Introducing 7 new prefabs and a line of matching landscaping stuffs, I tried something a little different than my usual style and methood of construction. It was a fun challenge and hope you like them! They were designd for the victorian community for caledon but of course are available to everyone and would look great anywhere.

I invested in a prefab script set called Paskis that is really great, all these houses have privacy windows and locking doors with a central privacy control. Its much more powerful and coordinated than my old script systems. You can set the houses up the way all my old prefabs work (by group), make them work for anyone, OR create your own customized list of avatars. Nifty huh?

They also all come with an auto rezzor (rez faux).

Rental Opportunities:
This area was designed first and foremost as a commercial shopping district, owned and managed by the Otherland Group. So naturally, each space is also available for rent and is just like any other shopping area in SL in that respect. We feel this is an exciting opportunity for merchants to have a shop in a high quality area where there is sure to be great cross traffic between people browsing/shopping the prefab collection as well as the goods provided by the many retailers in the shops. About the job:
I am not looking for someone to take over my customer service, but simply work with me as a team to help take some of the load off of me. You will be answering basic questions customers may have about products they are thinking about purchasing as well as doing some technical support for people who may be having a problem with a product. You will send customers to me when you can not help them, and in turn I may send some your way when I am overloaded. I would like to keep this flexible with no set hours - I would like someone who is frequently online in the afternoon/evening (US time) and is willing to just be available as needed. This means you can be doing whatever you want - shopping, socializing, building etc - I wont be requiring you to stay in the store, just be available and ready to answer questions via IM and willing to go for an occasional house call.

Characteristics: You should be...
1) Patient - Some customers can be frustrating, you have to keep your cool and bear with them.
2) Professional - Be concise and clear. Be able to communicate and apply store policy.
3) Friendly - Be willing to chat with customers a little, usually they are pretty nice.

Basic Knowledge: Some basic things you should know for this position
1) My Products- Even I have to check out something from time to time about my own products, but a basic familiarity with my products and how they work is a must.
2) Land - A basic understanding of land, especially its sizes and primitive limits is important in helping a lot of customers who are looking to purchase.
3) Building basics - This is a big one! A lot of people have problems rezzing their houses. You MUST be able to help someone place their house. Also understanding how to do basic things like select an individual prim, link things back together etc. Nothing really fancy.

Other Criteria:
I am looking for someone who would be interested in doing this long term and I can rely on to provide basic customer service coverage when I cant. Also willing to pay well enough to make it worth while for someone to do this. If you are looking for a temporary position this is probably not the job for you.

Payment:
Pay is highly negotiable as I am just feeling this out and seeing if I can make it work. I will start people at L$300ish a day on a trial/training basis, willing to offer much more than that based on overall performance and volume of customers you are helping for me.

Yes, I admit it. I stole a roof design from someone. I thought it was OK at the time, but now that I have been confronted about it I realize how very wrong of me it was. There is no way for me to make this right, the damage is done. However I will keep to my word and make a public apology to the person(s) I stole it from.

I extend my deepest apologies to the indigenous people of Indonesia and their ancestors for recreating a roof style in the form of a traditional Batak hut without any expressed consent or due credit. I can only hope for forgiveness.

It has been requested I make more commercial prefabs, so here is a set of 6 simple prefabs, they aren't very fancy, the idea is they are fairly neutral in tone so shop owners can fix them up to reflect their own brand, also since my other ones are popular for rentals, these are neutral enough to cater to many different styles and vendors in a mall type setting. They are also all designed to be used together in a mall/shopping area, but are available individually if you just want one for your shop on your own land. There are 4 1 sided facade buildings and 2 corner shops, this makes it possible to create rows of shops that flow nicely together. They are all also sized in multiples of 4 so that you can parcel each shop off right on the footprint for individual listing and traffic.

I recently got an anonymous comment on my blog addressing the fact that I sometimes cover peoples creations that are just reproductions of designs from Real Life. The author of the comment I guess feels that it isn't something noteworthy to just reproduce an item.

I was a little confused by this, although I can see a point. Personally, I would say I do hold an 'orriginal' design in higher regard than a straight reproduction. But where its tricky for me is deciding where a design becomes original.

It's no secret I have my sources of inspiration, inside SL and outside (RL). My textures and clothing have a hand drawn look, obviously because I have learned a lot from Toast and Nylon. My shading techniques are straight from Cory Edo herself. The way I have started to cut prims is totally mimicked off of what I have seen Makaio Stygian and others do. People often confuse my work for Juro Kothari's and Ingrid Ingersoll's, who has been friends since I was a newbie, or even since before SL. Beyond that I have a great admiration for some RL architects and designers that comes through in my buildings, furniture, clothing, and accessories.

Have I ever copied something I have seen it in RL? Of course I have. And I am not alone here. I would be a far richer man if I had a dollar for every designer dress I have seen reproduced in SL. There have been times where I have been caught down right staring at someone in RL or an item in a store, catalogue, on a commercial asking myself, "Isn't that the dress so-and-so released in SL a few weeks ago?"

I think the basic truth is, kill me if you want for saying this, but true originality is very rare. But consider how many people have reproduced a Le Corbusier item, and yet they are all different interpretations of the original design inside SecondLife. I have seen the same dress hand drawn and photosourced, but obviously based off the same item from RL. But the way they have been created, the approach, the way its presented etc makes them different and unique from each other. Doesn't that make it original to some degree?

This sort of copying isn't unique to SL, look at any RL designer and you can trace them back to their inspirations and influences. Other artists and styles that show through in their work. Look at how simple things such as a chair can be made a billion different ways, all based off the same simple idea. People take an idea, they reproduce it and maybe build on it, tweak it here or there. How many tweaks does it take for something to be original? 1? 5? 10? I guess my point is, we all reproduce to some degree, some of us take more artistic license with it, and others reproduce exactly. Making something exact is REALLY hard, sometimes its easier to take artistic license, but you have to be creative then and make sure your creation doesn't loose anything (whether that be functionality or aesthetics etc) by your changes. Personally I'm in no position to judge what kind of content is better. Each approach has it's own challenges.

If you don't agree with me on all that, that's fine. A more simple and straight forward answer to the anonymous poster's comment is that my goal with this blog is to simply feature quality content. The specific designer that was referenced makes high quality reproductions, and there are people, including myself who are interested in such items. So I will continue to feature them.

I have been finding myself straying away from mid-century modern/retro stuff lately... I always do this when the weather gets cold though.

Tapioca Tastes and Wisteria Garden & Gifts has been a place I should have covered long ago. They have some really cute stuff, it's a little more on the traditional but still contemporary side. I always think of her stuff as perfect for an airy villa somewhere thats contemporary but still has age and character. Her stuff always looks really cushy and soft, and takes on a sculpural quality, it's pretty neat. She also has lots of cool home accents that really tie a room together.

She said it beautifully, I really love this teaser shot and cant wait to see the rest of the collection. Beautiful prim work accented sparingly with textures, and it totally lives up to her term 'soft modern'.

It is really exciting to see something this great coming out of someone who doesn't even have a store yet. It gives me a lot of hope for the future. haha. No word on a location or anything, but I'm sure I will be drooling over the collection when it opens and post something here.

Ok, so im just going to cover a buncho stuff in one post

First off I was exploring and ran into this adorable seaside village thing that has some really coom stuff, primarily from japanese players (they always have such great style!) There were a few people i reckognized and a lot I didn't. Of course I had to hit the furniture shops down along the water, but they also have lots of other stuff.

I fell in love with this chair made by ebisuya Spork. I have been feeling the tropical look, i think this would look awesome in a little beachside hut with some hammocks. Does anyone know where I can buy a decent hammock by the way?

Barnes I'd be really interested in seeing pics of the homes of people whose style you like and admire. Decorating magazine type pics (House Beautiful, etc.) with listings of where they bought their furniture, houses, etc. would be interesting to me. I see so many people buy one set of matching furniture and set it out and it's boring. I like the eclectic styles of mixing and matching furnishings, paintings, plants, etc. so it comes together as a whole that really expresses who the person is. Love this blog by the way :)

I just really like the sterile aesthetic with the new lighting. Also the worn wood floors and beams on the interior are an interesting addition.

Oh mans I have been a slackerrrr.... So I am going to do a new products round up of sorts. Also look for a full lenght ContentConfessional in this month's issue of SecondStyle magazine.

Paraluxe offers a cool new chair today. It's very simple and sleek. I'm not sure if I like the ad or the chair better. Also her new Operation lounger is pretty sleek.

Maximum/Minimum offers several more modern classics, all very well made and true to their orriginal design. Mostly designed by Eileen Gray, Max must have a little crush, honestly though who doesn't have a crush on Eileen Gray?

Juro Kothari gave SL a tease of his new line of furniture and home decore venture yesterday on the forums. I must say I'm a huge dork and looking forward to it like none other. Many people don't know this but Juro is the person who inspired me in SL. When I first came I thought SL was a bunch of junk, untill Ingrid introduced me to his work. We not only share similar RL tastes but I know I have borrowed heavily from his SL building style.

I had the pleasure of seeing his store and some of his peices and he is deffinatly setting a new standard not only with his furniture but his showroom, display methood, branding, and overall sense of style.

Not sure when he will officially open but I'm looking forward to it and will spam you all with pictures.

So why haven't I been posting lately? I have been actually slaving away to bring you all something new. Now I hate posting my own stuff, but with some subjectivity I do consider this to be a very nice collection and would feature it if I did not make it myself. I really do not post everything I make here, just stuff I'm really proud of. Anywhoo I have just released the Mulholland Collection for my summer line of furniture and house. It has a really great retro hollywood/palm springs feel. I just love it.

I first saw Amelie Fonzarelli’s furniture at one of Wuvme’s big sales and was very impressed with her work as a whole. Since then I have been harassing her to set up a shop and sell her furniture. Amelie has an eye for detail that surpasses almost anyone I have ever seen in SecondLife for furniture; she effectively unifies all her sets with amazing attention to detail, form, color, and pattern.

To start off I will just show a simple piece of Amelie’s. It’s a gazebo type structure with hanging curtains and pillows called “The Play Pen”. The idea isn’t revolutionary but what really makes it stand out is the details, not only do they bring it all together but add a realness to it with variation. Look at the variation in the twisted fabric draped on the outside, instead of just copying one piece she created unique twists and folds in the panels. Also the textures leave you wondering if they are photo sourced, hand made, or somewhere inbetween. Either way they are outstanding and refined without that crusty ripped from google images look.

Although all her furniture isn’t really my taste, as we all know I have an extreme preference for modern, especially classic modern mid century stuff, but I really cant get over how unified her pieces are. For example this dining set; notice how the chair, table (especially the corner detail), and the accent candles’ forms all compliment each other with the loose ends, angles, and clean lines.

This red set is what initially caught my eye when I first saw her stuff. The lipstick red color and the warm cherry wood really give it some charm. Again the details just get me off.

Not only do I love the general rounded cushy form of this set but the structure and support (although not necessary in SL) is really cool. I love the modern sleigh style feet on this set, with the cherry wood runners, it’s totally cool. Also the other elements brought into the set, like the rounded steel accents on the shelf and the accent fabrics really bring it together and make it feel like a room, which is something I personally have trouble with when making furniture so I really admire how unified and purposeful everything is.
Amelie’s “Seduction in pink Couch” and accent pieces really have seduced me. Again it’s not the usual style I mess myself over, but come on look at it.

It does have a more modern minimalist ring to it than the rest of her stuff; I like the simple fabrics and shapes in it. Also yes, those are little bows on the pillows, it may be over the top adorable, but so am I (hahaa). The accent pillows are in fun shapes and placement which really adds to the couch. There are only so many ways to make the basic form of a couch with the primitives in SecondLife, and what Amelie is doing here is bringing up the presentation of that basic shape with textures and accents that really make it special.

This couch and accent lamp actually has some texture baking on it, but its subtle so it works even in a room/house where everything isn’t baked. Notice the texture on the couch for the cushions, also the base of the lamp with the pool of light at the bottom (hard to see but look closely).

So where can you find all this fabulous stuff? For now I have personally given Amelie space on my city land to set up a small shop. It can be found at: Barcola (68, 138, 25)

Hip Housing for Cool Cats.

Some nice designs going down here. I like the more modernist ones but he also has a few asian inspired prefabs that have nice texture work.

I really like this commercial build here, it takes in its suroundings but still has defined space.

Same with this one here, the lime is a little violent but we can dare to be bold. Plus its modifiable you can always change it I guess.

I never know what to do for roofs, this one strikes me because for me the shape of the house usually dictates the shape of the roof, this one seems to be the other way around.

Parrot island is one of my fav. places in SecondLife, it's a beautiful group of lush islands that you can explore and hang out at, also the jet skis are really cool!

Anywhoo not only is it a cool place for some messin' round but it has some great items especialy their $1 lighting store!

They have a wide selection of $1 lamps. A lot of them are really cool.

They also have a nice selection of pre-fab pools to check out.

These fabulous sleek deco club chairs are great for any place. The poses are increadible and so is the shadow texture work.

Modern Classics @ StyleHive

The StyleHive fashion show went off last weekend, truely one of the highlights was the actual venue of the event, built by none other than Aimee Weber. She recreated some modern classics in SecondLife for seating during the swanky show.These peices are now available for purchase in world!

The prim work is awesome, she did an amazing job capturing the shapes of peices such as the Luna Lounger, its harder than it looks to make things like that with prims!

Also as alaways amazing texture work to create the fabrics these classics are required to carry.

And of course the little baked texture details really give it a cool feal.

I also really liked the poses in them, you of course can't tell in the pictures but they are animated sits with subtle movements so you dont just sit like a statue.All the poses and animations were done by Kiari LeFay.

Go check it out! I didnt take pictures of all the peices, but thier is some increadible work there.

Aegis Prior is a man after my heart. Organic forms, simple textures, and clean design.

My favorite set, 'Saturn' the couch is also stunning but not for sale yet.

Also he is fairly new to SecondLife, can't wait to see what else comes out of this one!

gd gecko designs

Gecko Surface is part of the MaHoRoBa group, which in my opinion is the most promising group of people who have come into SecondLife recently. I'm really fond of gecko's orange bench sofa set (chair pictured). He also has made a few other really neat odd's and ends as far as furniture.

These keyboard chairs are really aweseome, they are a nod to the fact we are afterall in an online computerized world but also functional and sleek.

And I am so focused on furniture and architecture in SL, but really I left this blog open to all content in SL, and I must say, gecko has made some of my favorite prim shoes in all of SL, Steel Cap Safety Shoes.

Toast Bard tipped me off on an increadible content creator in SecondLife, Lyra Muse and her shop Taido. I'm with Toast, some totally amazing work going on here.

This place has some really unique peices.

The textures are beautiful, colorful, fun but still tasteful.

Prim work is spectacular, it almost takes on a sculptural quality.

And the concepts very innovative. This suspended round bench is very cool.

Bean Bag Chairs @ LostDog Designs

LostDog always has great professional looking poses that seem to work on all avatar shapes. I know I have bought some outdoor furniture from him before, as well as those cool bouncy balls everyone has that are highly entertaining.

Anyway, they just released the bean bags that are really awesome. They almost looked out of place in his shop, a lot more bold, bright and modern than his other stuff, which is just as well made but just doesn't always fit my style. The poses in these are very well done, and come in 3 versions - his, hers, and theirs.

I was setting up shop at The Sanctuary Shops and lofts at Vicina and my n00b I adopted, Jimmy, discovered this cute shop, I really like the green leather chairs, only 6 prim, nice texture work, and even a realistically animated sit, not overly fidgety but you also dont look like a statue.

The store itself was insanely cute and had a lot of style, I just love it. The goldfish are adorable.

And the vendor was awesome too. Very stylish place!

Selkirk Prefab Home v2 - Wenceslas Habsburg

The Selkirk Prefab 1.0 caught my attention when it was first posted in the new products, now v2.0 is out! I love the clean design but the natural elements of the wood beams, stone fire place and patio/porch. Also fairly low prim, 49 prims!

Also this house comes with scripted doors that realign themselves! Which is great, yours truely eternally strugles with scripted objects, I can't script myself out of a wet paper bag. Also it comes with a free hot tub. All for 250L. Pretty stylish deal.

I really like this modern collection at Belle Belle Furniture, a lot of their stuff is more contemporary/traditional but that is so over done in Second Life. The clean and simple textures on this set accent the actual prim work very well, and set it apart from the rest of their furniture.

I'm not sure how I ended up stumbling into this store but as soon as I did I landmarked it. !Chez Petite is located at New Caledonia (228, 236, 22) and features furniture and things for your virtual home that are low on prims and high on design. The fabrics (textures) have been chosen carefully to compliment each other and the result is an environment full of nifty stuff that all works well together. The store is set up in groupings of matching furniture, most of which have poses, that almost looks IKEA-like. Outside on the patio in back, you'll find really nicely textured, outdoor furnishings.
